White Lake
White Lake, which is adjacent to the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, is within a closed basin, meaning the watershed has no outlet, so all surface drainage accumulates in the lake at the bottom. Following rain and snowmelt, the water flows primarily underground, interacting with the soil, sediment and rock dissolving various minerals. The water that accumulates in the lake in the spring evaporates during the summer. While the water evaporates into the atmosphere, the dissolved minerals are not removed and accumulate leaving a whitish-gray ring around the edge. There are a number of small lakes and ponds in the area that display the same characteristics.
The surrounding geology is dominantly White Lake Formation sedimentary rock.
White Lake and the surrounding grassland and dry forest is within a large protected area consisting of lands managed by BC Parks and The Nature Trust of BC.
